A generative theme is a cultural or political topic of great concern or importance to learners in a Freire reading class. From this theme, learners can generate keywords and discussions. In Gaon Chodab Nahi generative themes are forced displacement of tribal/weaker section in the name of development, use of various powers by industrialist and need of struggle with unite. Keywords are we will not leave, fight, various developments like dams, factories etc, drying/polluting of rivers, lack of facilities like water, use of power by industrialists, unite and struggle.

As Arpit mentioned there are many generative themes which can be identified, but central generative theme or main generative theme here is the exploitation of tribal people and how to fight against it. To change the consciousness level from mythical to critical, it is very important to have the common understanding of problem. Generative theme provides this common understanding of problem.

The generative theme that can be identified here is that forest is an essential part of tribal people. Due to the unchecked industrialization these people are being displaced without any appropriate arrangement being made for there livelihood and well being.

According to Paulo Freire, “generative theme” is a cultural or political topic of great value. It includes ideas, doubts and challenges in dialectical interaction with the opposite theme with which it interacts/relate for its fulfillment. Generative themes in “Gaon Chodab Nahin” other than described in previous comments are “Development by destroying natural resources- is it worthwhile” and “Struggle to Survive.” The video shows that government is looking helpless and powerless in front of politicians and industrialists and is overlooking the problems faced by common people from the conversion of places into industrial towns and hubs.

This inspiring video has presented a contentious issue of development in an artistic way. The concern is rapid growth of our economy which the government strives hard to show its inclusiveness is rather exclusive in a sense that inhabitants are getting displaced. Rampant mining activities and industrialization deprive locals with livelihood. The video interestingly mention how capitalism is fuelling greed of babus. Other generative themes are destruction of ecology, issue of land acquisition, no basic amenities to local inhabitants. Also in the video is lot of collective protests against the power of government and big corporations.

Generative themes are those that contain the possibility of unfolding into many more themes, which again call for new tasks to be fulfilled. for eg: Forceful acquisition of forest land which leaves those people homeless seems to be a generative theme here. However how individuals perceive it may reveal only a limit-situation of oppression. There areas where people have joined together against this oppression on massive levels have come to light while many continue to suffer.

Many themes have been focussed on in the video. It first highlights the sense of belongingness of the villagers to their village. It also highlights the importance and the preservation of the natural heritage that our ancestors have left for us. It focusses on the oppression exerted by the outsiders and the beaurocrats on them. The ill effects of industrialization is also an area of focus. Most importantly, how collective action can help these people exercise their rights.

The video is of conscientizing the tribals for their right over what belongs to them, their land, their forests, their livelihood resources etc. The song is addressed to the world which seeks self-benefits at the cost of the tribal livelihood. The beautiful use of animation and the words in the song substantiate the cause. The way every community as fishermen, dalits and tribals is urged to get together against all that they have to suffer. Questions such as ’what we will we (tribals) drink if others drink pepsi/cola?’ and ‘were our ancestors foolish to conserve forests?’ are thought provoking.

I won't comment much about generative themes as mentioned. But the video also highlighted the dehumanisation aspect of the corporates, government and administration, wherein the system and government has left no stone unturned in exploiting the very abode of the tribal in extracting resources and suppressing any rebellion posed. But the collective action of these people is infallible and is here to stay, maybe we students sitting in the classroom can lend our ears and eyes to their concern and acknowledge the beacon they have ignited through this song.

Having seen the video, the first thought that came to my mind was what’s development – is it displacing harmless, poor and powerless people for providing better facilities to a minority of well-off people? Clearly, what we call life is not same for them (the have nots) and for us (the haves). True development would require bridging the gap between these two worlds. This, though, would require developing sensitivity to those for whom aspirations revolve around basic, harmless needs such as food, shelter and clothing. But are we even prepared to give them the little that they have and that they deserve?

"Gaon chodab nahi" video depicts the ugly face of our system as far as development is concerned. The generative themes we can draw from the video are running chariot of capitalism on the lives and the livelihoods of the tribals, their belongingness to motherland, their helplessness to protest against the system despite of their unity and their struggle for existence.

"Gaon Chodab Nahi" video illustrates the intense oppose of the native people (tribal, fishermen, villagers etc) to the degradation of their habitat and their expulsion from their origin. There is also an appeal to all the oppressed people to unite and continue their fight against the atrocities created by the industrialist and government in the name of development. Their traditional culture is at stake and their identity will erode as soon as they enter the working/ labour class. There is urgent need to look the side of the picture by the authorities before the situation become unmanageable.

In the video, exploitation of the poor and the weak by more powerful is very much evident. Powerful exercise their power either by authority, force or political contacts which the poor and thus the weak lack considerably. Thus when infrastructure growth was the prime motive, ethics and considerations of the tribal was ignored, their livelihood options and environment was destroyed and were pushed aside, leaving them with no option but succumb to their power. This causes marginalization of power and thus a greater rent seeking behavior for their personnel benefit by the powerful.

The primary theme of the song is the forced displacement of the tribals, and how tribals are using collective action as a means to resist it. It also shows the nexus of politicians, police and bureaucrats (each more interested in filling up their pockets) and how the system that is meant of protect people rights is turned against them. Other issues raised are various difficulties faced by the tribals from submerging of houses to scarcity of drinking water, environmental degradation and it also make us questions ourselves can we talk of development which sitting in comforts of home.

This song bring out the apapthy of displacement.Like everyone I also have the same feeling that forceful land aquisition is the central theme.People are displaced from their land in the name of development.Forest and land are destroyedwhich causes big environmental problems.Video instigate us to come together to protect our natural resources and find a feasible balance between deveopment and human apathy of displacement

The song very well conveys what is happening in the country today in the name of development. The central generative Theme identified in the song is how the collusion of corporates , government and police have on the one hand deprived the tribals of their legitimate rights and on the other hand polluted the natural resources.Another theme is that certain benefits are enjoyed by the urban class at the cost of the tribals.

The video shows the trade off between the developmental activities and the exploitation of the vulnerable population and the resources. Few people with power and influence tend to bend the rules and favour a certain group of people for their personal benefits. The actual suffers of the unplanned developmental activities are those who are directly dependent on them. But,as the video shows the sufferers will come up collectively against all this barring all boundaries of caste and creed.

HARENDRA SINGH said...

The generative theme that i could identify was that of "conflict between development and enviornment" at which level the developemnt should take place and where the line should be drawn for development to stop, so that the natives of these forsets dont feel as if they are being cheated on the name of developement.

The video shows how innocent and illiterate people living in forests or nearby areas are exploited by politicians and other government officials. On one hand, we talk of development and on the other we are not only snatching the livelihood options from the hands of these people but also making their lives difficult. It has been clearly portrayed in the video as to how the "the god of development" has played with them. The rich people are the ones who are the beneficiaries of these acts, the poor are often neglected.

Generative themes introduce or begin to introduce men and women to critical form of thinking about their world. It enables a critical analysis of a significant existential dimension that makes possible a new, critical attitude towards the limit situations. In the video “ Gaon chodab nahi”, adivasis, dalits and fisherfolks have focused on generative themes to realize that construction of dams, sanctuaries, factories, digging out of mines, cutting of forests have led to their displacement from village or have destroyed their forests, made the sources of water dried and dirty, fish dead, birds have flown and land acquired by politicians to set up industries.

According to Paulo Freire, an epoch “is characterized by a complex of ideas, concepts, hopes and challenges in dialectical interaction with their opposites striving towards their fulfilment”. Their representation constitutes generative themes which have the capability to generate sub themes from their keywords. In the given video, the generative theme is ‘the effects of development’ in which on one side we see construction of dams, sanctuaries and industries bottling mineral water, whereas on the opposite side we see industries and politicians involved in forceful land acquisition, deforestation and depleting water resources which finally led to tribal movement to save their rights.

The video highlights the transition from conservation of natural resources to its over-exploitation, from Social Development to Social destruction. The Tribal’s who even find it difficult to survive actually bear the cost of this development stratagem. The chain of command from bureaucrats to politicians to police, all have self-seeking motives (All profit & No loss) to back each other. The route of industrialization is exploiting every available tool of mother-earth. The marginalized are paying the price for the development which has no significance to them. But still there struggle to survival is on…. Still, they pay the price…..

This video is characterized by a complex of ideas, concepts, protests, hopes, doubts, values and challenges in the context of people's agitation towards growing industrialization which is hampering the sustainance of natural flora and fauna of the region. The video takes as a whole all the imbalances created by the various activities which directly or indirectly affects environment( and in turn people of the region ) and people's collective voice against the injustices created by the cahoot of politicians, bureaucrats and industrialists. The video made to depict adivasi protest(under Birsa Munda, the legendary adivasi icon) against bauxite mining in kashipur shows how the growing industrialization have proved a menace for the nature and tribals.

The generative themes witnessed in the song are numerous starting from developing infrastructure blindly at the cost of lives of tribal’s, promotion of aerated drinks of MNC’s when people in villages don’t have a glass of water. The nexus between politicians and contractors are doing all these to fill their pockets. Land and forest resources which are the livelihood and life support system for tribals are being snatched forcefully in the name of industrialization. The government is making these people disabled and paralytic. But the ray of hope is that people uniting and fighting to take what belongs to them.

Allegorical and dramatic Poetry and music with the flavor of native language and images has been used as instrument to depict the protest against the existing conditions in the village and the forest. Gaon chodab nahi is a means to depict the myriad problems (like displacement of the villagers, water pollution etc.) caused due to industrialization and preparing the population for the eventualities caused due to continued exploitation of natural resources. The video depicts the crowd action in the form of protest by the villagers due to their displacement from their native regions.

Gaon chodab nahi clearly depicts the struggle between two classes, the capitalists and agrarians. So the theme can be " Development at what cost?" It also tells about the pro-urban policies adopted by the government.
The capitalist class is supported by the ruling party and beaureucrats to design the policies, which favours so called development, in which they exploits all the means of productions and resources and increase the overall assets owned by them and this results the forceful displacement of local communities. Local communities always face the fear of unemployment, displacement and humiliation due to displacement.
