What are the institutions that create counterproductive results to liberation?

There are many such examples but to start with, education system is an institution which aimed at freeing people from illiteracy and develop new ways to approach problems but has ended up in producing dummies with a set pattern of thought and action.
Likewise, the purpose of 'Religion' was to raise humans from earthly matters and connect to God but became an instrument to intensify the issues using God!!
Others are civil society, NGOs and Science which have reversed the path of development.

There are ‘n’ numbers of institutions which show counterproductive results after successive years of its establishment. Why not to take the example of the highest institute of technology in our country, the IITs which were established with the mission of creating new ideas and innovators in the field of science and technology. Where do we find the vision “Gnayanam Paramam Dheyam” or “Knowledge is the Supreme Goal”, when we find them serving just as a black box for generating graduates with a six digit salary package!!!

Government is believed to exist to bring civil order, and, thus, improve people’s welfare. But, instances from across the world prove that governments function for the benefit of certain sections of people, while numerous restrictions are imposed on the others, thus, snatching away their liberties. Similarly, marriage is in a social institution that curbs the liberty of those who enter into it. In our country, police and Army are institutions that create fear in the minds of people with little access to power. Can we say most institutions create order by putting people in ‘chains’?

A lot of institutions create counterproductive results, as they are unable to maintain their original ideology in the long run. One such example is of juvenile correctional facilities. These were meant to protect and correct young offenders from undesirable influences, but over the past many years it has been observed that children from these facilities have shown little or no improvement. In many cases they were actually exposed to a much cruel life and this further pushed them towards the world of crime.

Government as an institution frames the policies which are meant for the upliftment of the oppressed section, but there are many instances that make these policies counterproductive. One such example is of reservation policies. Mandal commission was established for the reservation of the OBC in 1979 but, amidst a lot of hue and cry, Mr. V.P. Singh in 1990 introduced it to the constitution, then in 2010 it was extended to the states. The biggest debate lies here is that these policies have become political stunt rather than helping the prohibition of the discrimination of the oppressed.

Counter Productivity to liberation is exhibited by many organizations in the current scenario. One such institution is the judicial system, it has been instituted to provide quick and fair justice to the citizens but it has been observed that the judgement are neither quick nor fair. The judicial system has been bent to facilitate the rich and rarely is any actions taken against them. In addition the complex procedure to ensure “Fair” justice has led to increased lag in decisions of the cases, thus, the results in both aspects have been unable to meet the meet the expectations.

We will get numerous examples for the institutions that create counterproductive results to liberation, one among them which is in news is Microfinance institutes. These MFIs were initially promoted by Government for providing financial assistance to poor people and gradually help them to overcome from indebt. They provided loans irrespective of need and then charged very high rate of interest as well as used unethical means for loan recovery. Instead of helping poor people they pushed them into further indebt.

The urge to posses’ materials, as the majority possesses usually produce counterproductive results as in the case of electronics products. The mobile industry comes up with many models of mobiles having many features. When a person decides to buy a mobile, it is frequently observed that he buys the model with as many features as possible suitable to his pocket. But it is observed that he uses only two or three features in the mobile frequently. The facilities which he uses could also be provided by a mobile with half the price he paid for the existing mobile.

US has just two party system where as India has multi-party system to promote regional parties so as to enable better participation by every region and every sector of society. But what we see after 60 years of independence, these parties are creating nuisance in political arena. They lead to alliances with major parties, which at times create political uncertainty / instability. These Parties bargain a huge money and power for forming coalition. They promote corruption and fail to grow beyond their regional vision. These institutions use huge state resources and are counter-productive in nature.

UN was established to spread peace and harmony in the world after WW II, but it has found itself as a 'puppet' in the hands of US. Just take the example of US war with Iraq. Ultimately it was the war for Oil, and could have been stopped but it has ended with a huge amount of loss of life and property.

Many times, Institutes which have good reputation are found to generate counterproductive results. For example, St Augustine's hospital, Durban, run by the Netcare group, which runs one of the largest hospital networks in South Africa was found guilty of conducting more than 100 illegal operations between 2001 and 2003. The hospital group admitted receiving 3.8 million rand from an illegal organ trafficking syndicate that included the remove of kidneys from five children. The hospital was supposed to liberate people from the illness but it worked in a counterproductive way by playing with many innocents’ lives.

Seats have been reserved for women at the local level of governance to give them an equal chance of representation. However, in most of the villages we see the husbands or the more dominant in the family taking decisions on behalf of the elected representatives. The women end up becoming the face, the voice is that of the dominant. This is a counterproductive result to women’s liberation.

Earlier religions were divided into castes solely on the basis of the kind of work a person does, but as we look now, though it is followed as a norm, the purpose has changed. irrespective of caste, people perform different kinds of job, of their wish, but the level of dignity given to lower castes is still less.

The hoards of formal education systems and their affiliated schools that teach the children to rote method of studies, to use only prescribed methods of thinking, not to question the establishments and that curb innovative and free though and speech are the ones which we can say are shackling the minds.

Saa Vidya Ya Vimukhtaye- "Knowledge gives Freedom". Due to lack of "Vidya", our polity is one of the worst in the world. Young students who should be entering government and shaping the country's policies avoid doing so. They value a 7 figure salary more. But are they to blame? Who would want to be part of an institution where those in charge of running the country, sit and watch pornography while some legislators discuss important issues. Being a part of an institution like the government is counter-productive to one's development. It is good that these students shun politics.

A school is the first place where a child goes for education. Unfortunately, it is also the first place that trains people to pass in exams rather than gather education- the place which makes people "formally educated robots", but not educated and liberated in the true sense. Any deviation in thinking or questioning of the what is in the book leads to ridicule and rebuke for a student. We are trained to become "yes men" in the system rather than question and change things around us. "Saa Vidya ya Vimukhtaye"- "Knowledge alone liberates"?? No, it makes us servile.

“ Knowledge gives freedom”, this old saying dates back to centuries and has lost its real meaning now. Educational institutions have put children in the shackles of fixed curriculum and fixed pattern of pedagogy and induced ignorance among them. Children have lost their freedom of innovative thinking as if there are no new ideas to invent now. As a result, the institutions like the judicial system perpetuates injustice, or national defense may make a nation less secure. When specific diseconomy is on the increase, this means an institution is counterproductive to its original intentions.

The institution of reservation was built to liberate people of their caste identities and bring them to the mainstream, in some ways it has done that but in more than one ways it has proved counter productive for their liberation.

Mass Media as an institution in present times has failed to serve the real purpose it was recognized for. Contemporary mass media instead of bringing in transparency in the society and reemphasize the liberation of the masses is more often found trying cheap stunts by manufacturing fake news, pumping artificial arguments and raising controversies which a lot of times create public unrest, corrupt the young minds and disturbs the old. It goes the whole hog in order to get public footage just for profits. It pollutes the social environment and generates unwarranted disruptive communal activities as well.

Institutions like WTO, were established to promote world trade and equality but what has happened is that it has become a forum for powerful countries to get away with there demands which is promoting inequality on a global scale

One good example that creats counterproductive outcomes to liberation is our bureaucracy. Bureaucratic institutions or bureaucracy is established for implementation of rules and regulations and carrying out administration effectively for the people . But what’s the picture today, burdensome bureaucratic institutions are creating obstacles to economic development and grappling with corruption and red-tapism in every sphere, making lives of the people in general and poor people in particular more difficult.

Knowledge always liberates, but we have to understand that these so called branded educational institutions are centres to produce knowledge or they are just providers of packets of information. In the words of Swami Vivekanand" Shabdjalam Maharanyam Chitt Bhraman Karanam" means web of words is like a forest where anybody can be lost and misinterpret information with knowledge.

Ayan Roy said...

Many management institutes in India fall in this category. Although they profess as their goal pursuit of knowledge and excellence for its own sake, thereby liberating the intellect of the students from all restrictions, in reality they have reduced themselves to placement agencies. They are thus instilling in their students a greed for material gain rather than a genuine desire for knowledge or excellence.

If we look at the government then we find that some of it's policies were aimed to liberate people but ended up being counterproducive for ex-the loan waiver given to the farmers in 2008 ,now it did bring some relief to the farmers but it set a wrong culture as in 2009 the number of defaulting farmer went up considerably hoping that this year also government will waive off their loan and thus ended up being counter productive

The present education system is an aftermath of British Raj in India, wherein they uprooted the ancient tradition of the village schoolmaster, supported by the community, his status and survival as a guru. Instead the government chose to continue with efforts to educate the masses through a vast, centralised machinery and superstructure of staff, infrastructure and resources. This system trained Indians in rote learning and book cramming so that they could serve British officers in low rung positions like clerks. The same system exists today with minor changes and we are majorly producing highly qualified and well equipped 'CLERKS'.

Affirmative action (Caste based reservations) provided in Indian Constitution are intended to provide equal socio political economical opportunities for marginalised sections and to reduce inequalities. But, it created larger inequalities within the marginalised. It has produced class based divisions within the caste, by creating a creamy layer which has every access to all the benefits from and a disadvantaged section which is still marginalised and will not have any access. A new form of inequality nurtured by a system which was created to wipe out inequality.

The purpose of existing bureaucracy was to ensure proper governance and help the country to function smoothly and benefit its citizens. But the widespread corruption in our system has defeated the very purpose of the bureaucracy and thus it proved to be counterproductive.

Joint cultivation linked to socialist collectivization started in socialist countries like erstwhile USSR, China, North Vietnam etc, aimed at enhancing the income of the poor by cutting down the transaction cost, ensuring risk-sharing and liberating people from debt trap. But the defects in its implementation- coercive pooling of small peasant farmers, vast sizes of production enterprises, complete requisitioning of produce etc led to further deterioration of living conditions, complete collapse of agriculture production proving to be counterproductive defeating the purpose of its establishment.

The main objective for the emergence of Naxal movement( various militant Communist groups) in India is “the development in marginalized regions by overthrowing states”. But the presence of naxals in under developed regions directly/indirectly leads to the sustenance of its deprived condition. This results mainly from the unwillingness of agents of development to work in these regions. The resources employed are wasted or not targeted to local development. An institution intended itself became counter-productive to its objective.

A certain weightage is allocated for Class participation in the evaluation scheme for some subjects. This is an institution (rule) for encouraging positive involvement of the participants during sessions. But it has turned counterproductive as it attracts a lot of arbitrary participation. It justs ends up consuming the productive time of the session.

The microfinance crisis in Andhra Pradesh can be a counterproductive result to liberation. The concept of private microfinance had started with an objective of helping the poor by offering them small loans with little or no collaterals. The availability of loans became a easy affair, leading to an increased wish list of the poor. Lack of sufficient information to both parties incepted trouble. Unable to pay back the installements in time led to cohesive collection of the collectors.Unending cycle of debt forced many farmers to suicide. The portrayal of the whole event made the poor distance themselves from the MFI.

“Examination system" in schools and colleges is one such institution which I can think of that creates counterproductive results to liberation. “Examination” which was supposed to test the learning of an individual has become a system that promotes nothing more than mugging and a rat race to get good grades. It has become the biggest hindrance in real learning and in many it cases discourages original thoughts.

Counter productivity can be seen many parts of world where we see military is ruling the state.Military is to save the people of country, but many parts of the world people are fearful of military personnel’s. Military helped people of Egypt to overthrow Husni Mubarak and same military is now torturing people. There is a famous saying in Hindi "Rakshak bane Bakhshak" i.e protectors become exploiters. Whenever any institution crosses boundary it reduces the liberation of people.

Started with need of catering demand of farmers and with motto`s like "krishirev mahalaxmi"-Agriculture is wealth; n many others in STATE AGRICULTURE UNIVERSITIES.The recent trend of deviating from the core competency can be seen with more focus on addition of any programs that gives them more students and money. This is dangerous as already the trend towards agriculture is declining and with quality of education being degraded, the future seems to be darker until they are being realised what they were made for??

One example are the medical institutions which are supposed to liberate people not only from their diseases/ailments, but from the anxiety and frustration of not being able to live a life at full potential.Yet, the increasing cost of good medical care, the callousness of the 'medical elite',the ill-management of the government hospitals and unethical practices at some institutions defeats the very purpose of liberating the people and in turn adds to their existing worries.

Various institutions which are counterproductive to liberation exist in the society. The crux is that event though they have existed for so long the people have adopted more and more such institutes. Judicial system is one such example. The more laws we pass , the more oppressed a common person becomes. The people in power have capabilities to influence the world around them but for a brethren like you and me only has the option of moving into the trap. The other institutions which follow the same conventions are Asylums, modernization etc.

There are many institutions which have created counterproductive effects. The modern day agriculture, education systems, religious groups and institutions such as temples and religious extremists such as VHP, SHIV SENA, and political parties are some of the very few examples of the counterproductive institutions in the Indian contexts. All these institutions developed with certain well defined purposes but of late all have fallen prey to a diluted goals and actions which in no way are related to what they had been constituted for.

One such institution is WTO(World Trade Organisation) which pushes for more free trade agreements and removal of trade barriers, though significantly improving living standards of many and liberating them out of poverty with the advent of globalization but is proving to be counter-productive with increasing unemployment due to automation, increasing incoming inequalities for which India is the best example. WTO pushes forward the agenda which is more often than not favourable to developed world. The Doha round of talks about opening of Indian agriculture sector would surely affect lives of millions of our farmers.
