what we wants peace or aggitation

Dear friends,

In Collective action, we are talking about action for some social cause. but, according to Popkin people do it because of their self interest in it. yes, it is right whenever,we have option we go for better return with less effort. one factor is Self issurance i.e. food, house, livelihood, rights. a common man never think for any action. we are born up with the tendency "accept what is available". When these all action are driven by self interest, then how we can say, it is rational or irrational.

Action demands Body,Mind,Spirit,Need,Motivation,Finance also. is it possible to do something without thinking ??. in these mass action, people loose their life and in last, who get the benefit.....Free riders and only few of those activist. it is very easy to say that we are integral part of society...but, how much time we sacrifce for society, environment.

we are ready for bargain and trade-off with situations. never think about those people, who are suffering from these. Industralisaton is good. but, is it good if, you are doing for your personal interest.A farmer loose his land /livelihood for our housing apartment, factory.

So,  what you choose: 1. Collective action by farmers /Affected people

                                       2. Collective action by us ( Using resources efficiently)

I have nothing more to say, "it is all upto us. what we wants peace or aggitation".

nandi, the way i understand it the real challenge is to be an agent of change and ensure that you enjoy the fruits of tat change...i wud say ny person who puts in hard work without reapin ny return as foolish...

regarding 'accept what is available',the immediate modified proverb tat comes to my mind is 'ignorance is for the fools'!!!!

with reference to your point of 'when a farmer looses his land', its important that he shud have the 'capability' to demand somethin in return for it...the only thing tat the state can do is to build this capability in the farmer...the onus would then be on the 'capable' farmer to get a good deal for himself...

amit i agree withyou that people enter in social collective action expecting their own benefits. But it's not always true. it's true when we had rice and chappati exercise in d class. initially few of us choose to have rice. in the second round even some of who chose rice also chose the chppati as they saw the benefit chappati group was getting. But there would always be people who sick to rice, not because they like it...but because they know the underlying objective...they have feeling for it and they belive in it...and i am sure if that exercise is repeated for many times we will see that almost hundred percent turn to rice....as the time passes people also recognizes the underlying objective and high satisfaction achieved through it.......
and secondly i want to addressthe peace and agitation comment...
in today's scenario we need both, a balance of both...because both in extreme are detrimental...take the example of many small small warriors agitated against british rule...they had their share of success, but larger goal was not achieved...and peace in extreme like our government's policy to tackle pak's role in terrorism...everybody knows but still nothing can be done...our govt's peace is encouragement for them and allied outfits...but take the example of indian independence movement after arrival of Gandhi, the leader...it was peaceful agitation...he struck a perfect chord...a chord which had a perfect balance between peace and agitation..he agitated each and every wrongdoing by british rule but peacefully...that's what we require today...we can't sit at our homes expecting outsiders to distribute goods of this world to us..if we gonna follow the same tactics for long, we are going to get same evil fruits like terrorism....

nandy, you have raised a valid point of morality vs efficiency... wahat i would like to say is that the only solution i see is of making the morally acceptable/ social part of business profitable. i mean, benefit others and make money yourself.. i think this social entrepreneurship requires serious thought if more people want to be benefitted.
