Is management education meant to liberate learners? If not, why not? What are the value changes required if management education has to become a liberative experience?

Management education is a great model of liberal education. It has concepts representing a wide range of social sciences including economics, sociology, psychology, mathematics and statistics. There are also various disciplines like organisational behaviour, finance, business strategy. Students with understanding in these fields can draw from their education in liberal arts and sciences and their subsequent management education experience to develop a broad base for approaching future challenges. It helps students understand the extraordinary role of business in ensuring the efficient and effective use of global resources

Management education is meant to build up managers who can think, relate and work with a sense of freedom to deliver the required results. Care should be taken that the liberation achieved is just not external but it should be internal as well. Otherwise they would behave as a bunch of oppressed individuals who want to return back the pain they suffered during their time and if this happens the entire motive of management education is bound to fail.

The goal of every education system is to liberate the learners and management education is not an exception. But we see that today management education has become a system engaged in making fire fighters. Teaching you to jump into fire and somehow come out alive. But it should rather be focussing on learning to realize our real strength and utilizing this to bring the best out of given scenario.

Management education is definitely designed with an aim to liberate the learners as it has adopted an activity based approach which attempts at liberating the learners cognitively & intellectually. But the real question is whether the mode of imparting this education efficient enough to realize its aim. How effectively the learners adapt to this approach & imbibe the benefits inherent to it which are essential for liberation. Thus more than the content of management education the mechanism needs to be made more interactive to achieve the required aim.

Based on an interactive & practical oriented approach, management education aims to liberate the learners from not only the traditional system of school education but also the inhibitions which could’ve grown in an individual because of it. It moves beyond the teacher-student dichotomy towards the one where both are seen as participants in the learning process. It would become an even better liberative experience if the scope of the interaction between the participants is increased beyond the set academic curricula towards more of real life experiences.

Management education is clearly meant to liberate learners as evident from the fact it brings all the learners to same platform of learning by inculcating diverse courses irrespective of their background. But sometimes the workload, stress and continous mind boggling make learner feel as if they are oppressed and want to break free of it.The resorting of learners on the banking system of learning should be avoided to make it a more liberative experience.

Certainly management education is meant to liberate learners, but in recent times in Indian context it does not appear to do so effectively. It can be partially due to learners and partially due to mentors involved. Learners see management institutes as placement agencies and learn just to get good placements, while mentors tries to imbibe practical and moral values to students but they are adapted to the old methods of just banking the students with their knowledge. Serious thoughts are to be given towards what value addition each lecture will do to the students and towards its implication as well.

Management education is meant to liberate leaerners because it provides an opportunity to study different subjects and perspectives of various writers and then you reflect on them. This liberates our mind. Also as we read different view points and discuss and apply them in practical problems it helps to change set pattern of thoughts and reduces inhibtions and mental blocks.

Management Education is meant to liberate learners from the usual way to think and act to various situations . Every problem has a different solution depending upon the perspective of an individual. Finding out new paths for a destination is an inclusion to management education but the pattern of education is restricted to textbooks and focused on classroom learning.Restriction of though process can hamper new solutions and most important , new questions !! What we are in grave need is "OUT OF BOX THINKING".

Learning can liberate a person only when he wants to be more conscious and understanding rather than to get a certificate or for being called as a possessor of knowledge. This does not fit into management education as it is based on probabilistic modelling. Rather than being linear in nature, it should try to create discontinuity within this education system. The value changes like downgrading the importance of exams and improving participant- faculty participation in fostering productive work will be useful to improve the management education.

The management education meant to liberate learners in terms of thinking something innovative, contextual and productive. But, the compulsion to finish the set course curriculum within a time limit left the faculty and the participants with less interaction and more workload sometimes. Hence, it is needed to make management education more interactive and interesting. And, this is possible by free and productive participation from both sides taking into consideration the more and more real situation examples.

Management education gives us cross functional knowledge which sometimes enables us to think "out-of-the-box"
But at the same time when it focuses excessively on profit maximization or cost benefit analysis of everything, it tends to constrain our thinking.

Eduaction in any field can be a means of liberation. It fails as a liberation force when the candidate start looking at it as a means of making money. Management as a discipline can be a means of liberation if the correct values and ethics are imbibed along with the subject knowledge. If the knowledge is applied in the right way it can can promote liberation.

I need Liberation from what? I think that an honest opinion in itself would signify some degree of liberation. Understanding anything requires you to think critically but that does not detach me from the values I have imbibed over my life span. If liberation means autonomy from inhibitions and propensities, a strong will to be ethical and equitable at times when the stakes are too high, then only management education might not suffice for the liberation. One very important factor would be economic independence as was the case with Surat co operatives which preconditioned economic independence for their presidents.

The present management course tries to impart a holistic overview of all the sectors and components needed for the managerial interventions. It inculcates confidence in the individual, usually aiming at ascertaining future security and economic growth. But if it has to be on the liberative front then it should bundle all those things which gives confidence to the individual in such a way that he is ready to face all unforeseen challenges.

Education as envisaged by leaders is supposed to liberate learners from ignorance and thus leading to the overall development of oneself. But management education of today is aimed at producing corporate servants who knows nothing but management jargons. To become useful, it should focus on teaching how to live and create value to oneself and the society and churning out leaders who can be drivers of positive change by incorporating ancient wisdom to modern management ideas. This will require a radical change in the government policies and also the societal view towards the expected returns from management education.

In present context, I don’t think management education is meant to liberate learners. The learners are only imposed with the practical and theoretical aspects of management theory, which may be attributed to low level of participation and dialogue from both the parties. To make it a liberative experience, it is essentially required to eliminate banking concept of education where student’s scope of action is somewhat limited and knowledge should emerge as representative tool.

Management education attempts to develop skills for problem structuring, decision making and negotiation. The learning from the classroom is mere guidelines for the managers to be, to tackle real problems and questions on the field and experiment; in short enables the learner to independently explore the plethora of opportunities. But getting caught up in the web of jargons ,blind application of the learning ,standardizing solutions ,over emphasis of cost benefit analysis which seems to be the general trend spoils the process absolutely. Can we be students of management science in the true sense is the question!

Education leads to liberation only when the person getting education has the motive of acquiring knowledge not the degree. To liberate, the learner had to think on the every aspect of the given thing instead of the restrictive aspect. Management education liberate the learner only when there is active participation from both side that is teacher and the student on the key concepts of the practical examples. Learning should be beyond the given reading material.

Management education aims at creating a person who can develop a rational approach towards practical life problems. Going beyond classroom learning truly liberates oneself when the person gains knowledge and not just learns or cram things. For management education to become a truly liberative experience it needs to be ensured that the education is not just classroom learning but an interactive process between both the faculties and participants and also that the education could be used for the betterment of the society.

The purpose of education is enlightenment and freedom from the narrow conventional identity of self. This is more pertinent to managers who have a wide outreach and therefore a greater potential to influence people around them. Liberation means self-development which is the beginning of social-development. However, in the light of globalization and the competition that ensues there from, managers are expected come with a toolkit to fix problems which shifts their focus from self to the outside world which is seen as a heap of problems. Thus, in the present day scenario education is no more about liberation.

Management education aims at achieving conceptual and experiential learning both. The learner gets specialized in any particular stream of management and so we can have domain experts. For management to become a liberated experience having the real life experiences is an integral part. Reading theories build concepts but real time experience is the time to apply all that is learnt and draw inferences.

A person feels liberated when he becomes confident of his capabilities and is ready to handle situations in his own ways and rules. There always is a need for self learning, apart from the formal management education for the person to get a liberative experience. Knowledge and practical experience enhance the feeling of liberation for a person. For example, including fieldwork segment, OTS and MTS along with the classroom segment in rural management course help a person to get a liberative experience.

Management education gives us knowledge about of different fields required in management. What they also install in us are values and ethos so that when we deal with situation, we do not take the wrong decision. However, it may not be true to all institutions which provide management education. The value changes required are very simple in learning but difficult in implementing.

Unlearning is perhaps the most critical factor in receiving education. Yet how many institutes encourage unlearning and learning something new? Most of the subjects taught in the course are nothing but a collection of facts and trends which are faithfully disseminated to the students. He/She is tested on their ability to apply them. So the managers produced from these institutes are at best problem solvers. Management institutes should encourage students to try something new and their ability should be judged on the way they reflect on the material taught to them rather than finding answers based on various formulae.

Management education is designed as such to liberate the learners. It enhances the capabilities of learners and make them able to handle the real life situations. Management education help the learners to think in their own way, generate new ideas, create new strategy. It provides diverse kind of learning irrespective of the education background. Theoretical Knowledge followed with practical experience creates a feeling of liberalized.

Priyadarshini said...

Management education is meant to provide the learner with a variety of perspectives to observe and analyse a situation. Whatever way the learner chooses is finally his personal decision. It also provides different tools and faculties to the learners which can be utilized to actually put the perspectives into practice. In short, it gives a broader world view and supposed to liberate the learner.
However, management institutes have reduced to become placement agencies and the cause of education is lost. Only if, both the interests are separated, management education can become a truly liberative experience.

Management education broadens the horizon of an individual’s perception & view towards the society, as any meaningful and lasting change in the conduct of organisations toward societal responsibility and sustainability must involve the institutions that most directly act as drivers of behavior, especially academia .It is a participative approach which shapes the attitudes and behavior of individuals through research, training, and other pervasive, activities. The aim is to generate a wave of positive change, thereby helping to ensure a world where both enterprises and societies can flourish. It is far beyond placements and packages.

Education liberetes us from darkness of ignorance.Hence management education does.It is right blend of many subjects from different fields. It opens up the mind of the learner which help him see things diffrently from his peers of different background.

Nowadays management education is being perceived as a shortcut to make money. This is the fact which is stopping this from becoming a liberator for a learner. Yes it is true that it is very worthy for accelerate the rate of success of the organization. But learner should not think of himself only he should extend himself and work in real spirit.

Management education as provided today is not meant for liberating learners rather to impart a particular set of skills necessary to manage the resources under a manager. A human being gets liberated only if he wishes to do so and denies the regular and orthodox ways of life, questions and reasons. It is purely an internal process. If management education has to become liberative it will have to be separated from commercialization and capitalism.

Liberation from opression be it external or internal is one of the aims of education. Management education only provides an extra feather in the basket of rationality in a way of thinking and applying the managerial concepts in the ground realities. Management education also liberates learners by freeing them from the inhibitions of routined from of education as management education also includes the practical approach and real life situation based activities.

Management education is about imparting professionalism and teaches to think on foot at a given situation...but it doesn't mean liberation. We are trained to be managers but not learned managers...learning comes from within and how we perceive and analyze the environment and situation around us. It is sad that very few mng institutions teach to 'think' and not merely reduced to profit-loss-risk. Here education should trigger the cognizance, critical thinking and ethics. these ethos and values need to be internalized to be able to see and feel from other's view.

No it was not meant to liberate anybody. The sole aim of management is to improve efficiency in the processes whatever it may be. It is a science that equips the learners with tools to pursue these goals. One does not go through management education to liberate oneself; there is a different field for that; it is called philosophy. Values should be inculcated in students to make them liberal thinkers, which i guess IRMA is trying do to some extent.
