Placement conundrum

Before the student enters IRMA:

Parent: what salary will my son/daughter get at the end of the course?
Faculty: Last year's average salary was 6.5 lakh.
Parent to Son/Daugher: I can afford you better education where you can get better salary.
Son/Daughter to Parent: I want to work in social sector.
Parent to Faculty: In social sector, will she/he get at least 4.5 lakh per annum.
Faculty: I think so.
Parent: Otherwise, it is not worth you going there I spending 4 lakhs for you.

What is education?

The real purpose of education is character and faculty building but in above post it seems to have reduced to as mean for better lifestyle than better life. And unsurprisingly this is scenario everywhere. People think rationally to put themselves in better avenues, they agree 'its better to light the candle than to curse the darkness' but they wait for someone as incentives they think is not rewarding. The only logic that reflects to me is 'self above all' in this case. Even if purpose is service people will look for incentives before opting it.

Education is tool to realise ones potential and to broaden the horizons of mind, but now a days, it has been seen as medium of earning money.Only education has potential to change the deprivation of oppressed as it helps them in understanding the real cause and make them capable to fight against the existing system.Education system is creating the machines to produce and sale more by using brain and not realy working on the mind to liberate it.

The commercialization of education has made it slowly lost its value and importance in an individual's life. Gone are the days when books were worshipped. Now it ahs only become a tool to earn money. Earning money is not bad but the quality and value associated with education is lost.

Education is simple process of learning about the world. But I believe here we are talking about formal Professional education. The idea is to add certain skills in ourselves that would help us do better in professional world. The focus should be in getting as much value addition as possible. The salary and other thinks should be secondary. Once we have the right set of skills these things are going to come behind us we won’t need to go behind them.

The basic motive of education to have a "formative effect" on the way a person thinks and acts. But in today’s world education has become a source of business. One invests with the very thought in the back of the mind that the return should be more as compared to the investment, irrespective whether one learns or not or whether he or she gets any job satisfaction. The example cited above is a true demonstration of the prevailing scenario in the field of education which is mostly creating stereotyped machines rather than any “true” learned scholars.

The main purpose of education is the develop the capabilities of students to be the future generations of sutainable value for business and society and work for sustainable global economy. But,today sadly commercialisation of education has led to eroding of moral values.Education has become highly remunerative business and it thrives on raising income expectations of students. The rush for short-cuts to achieve economic prosperity has pushed moral values in the background.

In this present world education is seen more as an investment rather than a source of active learning. People have become myopic about education and have started prioritizing education based on the economic returns it fetches for them. For some management education is a tool for graduating into those salary stats which surpass the expectations of most people. But education in real sense is venturing into the hitherto unknown fields or updating our knowledge in various subjects. The prerequisite of education is interest in the subject not the returns associated with it.

Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, but professional education generally analysed on the basis of cost benefit ratio.
education become more business oriented like if you invest 'x' you should getback 'atleast x',in this way we forget the very purpose of education "value adition"....

Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. Technically education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another. But here it seems that education has become the medium for earning money. Before opting for any educational programme people today look at cost benefit in the short term, not at the values attached to it. With the money, one should also be look at the values and ethics associated to it.

While the attitude of the parent seems shallow; it nevertheless resonates with the perception of education today. Students are treated as commodities and are expected to give more returns with every value addition (degrees). The difference between an educational institute and a factory in this respect is thus blurred. People should expect some return on their time and money which they have invested but it is imperative that they don’t lose sight of the fact that the primary objective of education is to enlighten the mind, and not serve as a vehicle of getting a better paying job.

Incident reveals the banking concept of education. Here parent want maximum return on his investment in fact he has also calculated threshold limit of 4.5 Lakh worth of his investment. Unlike my other friends I don’t attribute this incident to a rat race or degradation of education system rather I want to emphasize it as the reality of today which all of us have internalized.

“Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye”- Knowledge is that which liberates.
Education is the means to acquire knowledge. Education empowers people to understand their rights and duties. It is the means by which the downtrodden can climb out of social stigma. It is perhaps the only stage where caste, class, sex do not play a discriminating role.
But, the present scenario shows that education is just a means to pocket a job with hefty salary. Educational institutes have become placement churning machines and mostly choice of course is based on their placement generating value. Such is the downfall of education!

Education gives you agency to make progressive changes in your life as well as life of others. Education cannot be considered synonymous with literacy. Education enables an individual to take a wise decision. Education should not be like a banking system where the person imparting knowledge would keep on adding or filling in information and the person absorbing it would generate result like an interest rate. Rather education should be a two way learning process.

In today’s times education is perceived only as an academic activity which is aimed towards realizing the materialistic aspirations. But in real sense education extends beyond the confines of academic & research institutions. It is imbibed in every aspect of the world surrounding an individual. To a willing student even the mundane objects & activities of life can educate. Thus it can be said that the process of acquiring knowledge through experience (Both own & others), innovations, creativity, & exploration which accentuate the individual’s intelligence is called education.

Saurabh Sharma said...

Education to put it in simple terms is to grow. An individual born in the world needs to grow all his life to suit in a best possible world to his surroundings. This growth is not always voluntary but involuntarily the world around us educates us by throwing new experiences every day. An academic curriculum is just an approach to institutionalize some of the components of education & obviously education is not limited to it only. Education can be seen as a process which enables an individual to grow by incorporating new qualities into him.

Education basically refers to the process of learning and acquiring information. In real sense what significant contribution one can make to a particular segment through his learning is the essence of education. From the view point of parent, education is basically what return they are getting on investment foreseeing a better status and standard of their child. From the point of son/daughter, s/he is interested to work in social sector and want to acquire knowledge in that field irrespective of investments representing that she wants to indulge in the real process of education.

ruraldenizen said...

Education is imparting knowledge that helps in liberation. Also it means bring out the potential to lead in life. But education is seen as a tool for establishing status in society. Education quality is measured in terms of return on investment, payback period.
In Indian society, only academics are important and that is basically gathering knowledge without understanding its practical use and values associated with it. Important skills like visionary ambitions, creativity, risk, ability to bounce back from failure, motivation, processing of knowledge, using inspiration are ignored.

Education is the process by which one can transmits its knowledge and skills from one generation to another.Education is the process of learning, understanding the world, generating ideas based on knowledge. But now a day education is seeing more as the way of earning than the way of learning. Parents think, the education of children as investment. So they think of return on their investment.earning money is not bad. But learning for earning money only is bad.

Education has become a commercial product. People measure the success in terms of money value fetched rather than the learning attained. The way schools and universities advertise themselves has been a major determinant of this perception. Ironically the purpose of education has been reduced to merely acquiring a certificate which can help in getting a job with high income.Students with idealism and welfare intentions are discouraged by teachers, friends and family. Education has become highly remunerative business and it thrives on raising income expectations of students.

Rationality and self-interest have come to be perceived as what should be the prime reasons for obtaining an education. Extra rational means irrational to most people.

Education is freedom, not a pathway to a career option. Not that people do not know this. It is probably hidden deep inside and is invisible because of the multiple layers of pretence that we cover it up with.

Doing what others do is considered 'safe'. This leads to a dichotomy between what we know as true that is hidden and what we pretend which becomes reality as we practice it every day.

In real sense, education is the transmission of knowledge, skills and values. But, in present scenario, commercialisation of education has changed its purpose of developing individuals to their full potential. Rather than acquiring quality education to serve society, students and even their parents are more concerned about higher salary packages after getting degree from a premium institute. Now, we prefer to go for professional education which is expensive. So, we tend to think in terms of high return on the investment done in our education.

The purpose of the education is the all round development of personality. It helps us know many unknown things. But the present scenario in education has been changed. Now education is considered as one of the lucrative businesses, so the major private players from within and abroad are also venturing into this field. Parents are ready to spend huge money on education for their children to get hefty salary. Higher education is now synonymous with placement with hefty pay package.

As can be seen from the conversation, education for some might be a mean to attain money and for some it is for purpose of enlightenment. For me, education is nothing but which tells you the rationality, power to decide what is right and wrong. It gives you decision making ability and a way to live life.Education enables you to speak, listen and most important helps you understand other person's point of view.

Education can be called as the lifetime continuous process that brings about freedom from many things in life. In today's fast moving world most people looks at education as an investment. If they feel that the ROI is going to be less they are less likely to choose that particular stream. This deteriorates the very objective of education that is the freedom. If we need to enjoy the fruits of education we first need to change our world view and then through education internalization happens to us. Then there is going to be a change in overall outlook.

We are born animal education makes us human.Choice of education makes this true. education against the choice will cause conflict. Its the dilemma for the student whether to get the education of his /her choice or of parents choice. Education instead of being the source of knowledge become the return giving investment. education which make us sustainable and help us to do what we want to do is the real education.

We as individuals tend to materialize even the costliest of entities and the imbibed "GREED" in humans has resulted in increase of self interest and individualism. Life has become a Credit - Debit equation where everything is equated with benefits. Education has given new terms such as "PACKAGE" and "STATUS" to the individuals who concentrate on grades and placements rather than the learning which can be used throughout the life to incur huge benefits than the initial monetary benefit.

Education is a progressive discovery of finding our own ignorance. An oppressed who dares to think beyond material possessions or beyond the concept of “To be is to have” cannot free the oppressor unless they free themselves. This can be achieved only through a change. Education is one of the most powerful weapons to achieve this change which nowadays have been debased. As Abu Bakr rightly said “If an ignorant person is attracted by the things of the world, that is bad. But if a learned person is thus attracted, it is worse”.

The face of education has changed in today’s world. In order to win everything people end up competing in the rat race. The focus from values and learning has shifted to just getting a return for everything we do. The expense made on education now is viewed as an investment and the tendency to gain back the entire amount spent has increased rapidly. This is also one of the causes for deteriorating quality in education. With time passing education is transforming from a means of learning into an apt way to satisfy our desires.

True education should open up our minds to explore endless possibilities within ourselves and in the outside world. While its purpose would be solved if it enables us to think freely and break free of our self imposed and social constraints, the very ( handsome amount ) fee we pay for getting it defeats its purpose and constrains our thinking to focus on the immediate returns in the form of the placement figures.

Education today is just not a means of getting knowledge for majority of people. Rather than a medium to learn and excel it is seen as the source of advantage one gets pertaining to job qualifications. In the post the parents seeing education as a source of earning money, cannot solely be blamed for the argument they put. The economy has taken a steep turn and education is getting costlier every day. When they see themselves investing so much they expect something in return in form that their child earning a good salary.

Education is the process of gaining knowledge, aptitude and skills. it has a formative effect on mind which helps in contributing more to this world both physically and mentally. but seeing current scenario it is more of an investment wherein nobody wants loss. educational degree has merely reduced to a qualification which helps you acquire wealth.

Education has become a means to earn high salary and to keep the standard of living high in contemporary world. Almost everyone wants to complete higher education in order to get higher salary. People, after carefully evaluating their current earning capacity and amount that needs to be invested to attain the status commit themselves to pursue higher education. If the education is is not providing that a person abandons the plan to go for higher education.

When human-beings came to earth, they used to work to feed themselves. They first learnt the way of working through experiences and then educated the same to their descendants. That is the real education where one needs to be educated for being efficient. But the way the parent responded to the faculty is like he perceived education as investment for money only instead of as for need for fulfilment of his son/daughter’s desire. It is true that education is like an investment for getting return in future but not in terms of money only but also in terms of efficiency.

Education in today’s world is seen as a term deposit on which investment is done keeping in mind the return is going to fetch after the time period. The expected salary after the term is taken into account for engaging in the course. Education on the other hand is the development of mind character and abilities of a person which is getting diluted in present scenario. Education therefore is seen only as a mode of earning money taking rather than a value addition to the persona of an individual.

The attitude reflected is to value education on the basis of ROI where any other factor becomes secondary. The return value is also weighed in terms of monetary gains and whether the society perceives it as a success. Choice based on interest and liking for particular field of knowledge doesn’t seem to be the natural way to make career choices anymore! This trend remains a reality even when there aren’t any pressing economic constraints forcing some decision. Education should be a means to enable self with the essentials to explore one‘s interests and choices.

This nowhere includes or indirectly implies any monetary gain or any future security. However, right from tuition classes to coaching institutes, it is always reminded to a student that education has a money value attached to it.

Education is the process of becoming an educated person who has access to optimal states of mind regardless of the situation he is in. Education helps one, to perceive accurately, think clearly and act effectively to achieve self-selected goals and aspirations. It helps in building character of a person, empowers him to think rationally and broadens the horizon of his mind. But looking only at the monetary gain defeats the purpose of education, education is far beyond mere return of investment.

Parent’s reaction what we see here is the typical example of judging success by comparison. For a person who considers success as knowledge he gains in life and achieving what he desires to, salary is not at all indicator of success. But for people who starts measuring success by comparing with salary and job, the education is a just a means and not a want

Vaibhav Gupta said...

Education is an effective and efficient tool of enhancing one’s capabilities for sustainable development of both the individual and the society. But education in today’s world has taken an altogether new dimension where people value its worth by accessing the return they get on the investment. In that sense for many, the more a person earns the more he is educated. In between all this the real purpose of education is misunderstood and lost somewhere. It is high time we all realise this fact or else even after getting many degrees and awards we hardly would be a bit educated.

Tejas said...

Basically education is learning which develops your mindset and attitude towards life. Today in the commercialized world there is cost benefit analysis involved even in education. So for a general public who bear the heavy costs for education, they need to first go through the costs which they have borne. Today colleges are taken as placement agencies where a degree will guarantee a good salaried job and the scenario has resulted from the need to first recover the cost for investment in education and then pursue their passion.

manoj sonawane said...

In this case parent should not be misunderstood as one who value education or institute just in terms of placements, and end of the day one requires money to live. Last generation have always seen education as a way get better employment opportunities, hence consequently better life standard, they have also seen education degrees which were not able to open the door of such prosperous life to its pursuers, and this may have caused formation of such calculative attitude towards education. but surely this attitude should be changed.

Education does not only mean gathering knowledge and skills , it also means using these skills for doing something good, for fighting against injustice, to be mentally and physically independent. i do not think just money can bring all this. so directing the purposefulness of education towards only earning money is not right. Education helps you grow beyond societal boundaries, it liberates you.

Gone are the times when educational institutes were temples of knowledge where the priests were made. Today it is only a means to attain the ends which is well paying jobs. This attitude once again reinforces and reflects the 'consumerism behavior' which is the mantra of our age. The effects of capitalism and consumerism have not spared even the education sector which is now reduced to a mere instrument for getting the much coveted jobs and social status.
