mumbaikar vs mumbai

i read the article with the same title in indian express today.Article dealt with the issue of non marathis in the bombay specially migrants from up and bihar. This time hurling of stones at amitabh bacchans house gave the issue a distinctive sheen.I agree that people are having latent tendancies and when these prejudices are incited by any stimulant (raj thackery in this case)than it becomes an aggressive crowd. on the other hand there is also the question of multiple identity and the person who is member of that aggressive crowd might be related to the receiving end (non marathis here)in one or other context(collegue, neighbour.)Now question arises that why this person has not given preference to his latter identity or why a different kind of collective action didnt occur in favor of non marathis by some members of the crowd attached to these non marathis by virtue of their mutiple identity? himanshu jain(28013)

Of late India has been witnessing increasingly intolerant modes of behaviour. Regionalism keeps rearing it’s ugly head from time to time. The recent malicious comments made by Raj Thackeray a fledgling leader targeting a particular community demonstrate a blatant brand of regionalism that has no place federation like India. To probe the designed behind such condemnable act it’s solely motivated by political ambition. It tends to be a desperate act taken by Raj Thackeray to resurrect his dwindling political clout. Now coming on to the genuiness of the issue raised by him,. In the name of finding for the interest of the Marathi Community in Mumbai he is holding the north Indian migrant responsible for the problem of Marathi community. But his contention carries a little truth on substance. Given the fact that these migrants are engaged in pity works and so are not expected to poise any threat to the work opportunities of Marathi’s who are better placed that’s why Raj is receiving little support from the Marathi community for whom he professes to be fighting. What Bal Thackeray did four decades back has little possibility of successes that Raj Thackeray wants to emulate.
In a pluralistic country like India these kind of frenzied mob leadership is not going to work. Such acts of belligerence and intolerance must be dealt with an iron hand and effective rebuff to such acts can be concerted collective action of peace loving people
