Should JAATRA be scrapped?????????

After having a great discussion about the MILAAP, we are going to have another event "JAATRA" in February which is a block wise competition. Here also we need collective action and co-operation from each one within a block with the motive to win JAATRA. For this we are having holiday for 4/5 days i.e. no classes, only participation for event.
But many people have booked tickets to be far away from campus during this event. Still many are planning to do the same.
If the students themselves don't want to participate in the event then what is the use of JAATRA?
Why should the free riders be given another chance by having this event? Here also, there is no compulsion to be here in campus during JAATRA like MILAAP. so why JAATRA?????????????
Just scrap it and have classes so that at least there will be collective action and co-operation for attending the class.

Since, Jatra involves two full days of non-stop activities, we are given a Sunday off..Pre-planning during Jatra has happened in the past but as the date of Jatra came closer, people have scrapped their plans and participated in this 'war of blocks'. Its d spirit of 'Jatra' tat continues to live in IRMA!!

We as a student of IRMA should try to be an ingredient of its culture also. JATRA is one of the major events for that. Our individual representation means allot when we are looking forward for JATRA..... an event in which blocks become The Group , having its own strategies, action plans and spirit to prove itself to be The Best One.... but as Anshuman has mentioned that people are leaving..... This will dampen the charm of block’s collective representation, its unity and zeal to emerge as winner.

Since we are a part of the Irma community, we also need to respect it's culture and traditions. Jatra is one such tradition. Students deserting the campus during these days depicts their self-interest overpowering their will to be a part of a continuing tradition.

Everyone have his or her personal life and personal needs. i agree that being part of the institute, u r expected to follow the culture but that need not be the final and binding on his life. leave alone planning their journeys, how many were found in the seminars or the milaap and udaan except for culturals, even though they stayed in the campus??

I think that instead of focusing on who's leaving and why, the interested participants should focus on how to make the event a success. It’s too idealistic to expect 100% participation in all events and some people leaving the campus because of their personal priorities should not deter the rest from enjoying and participating. Some participants left the campus during Udaan, wasn't Udaan a success? Some will leave during Jaatra, can they be stopped??? No. So let us focus on the 80% of things we can control instead of the 20% we can't.

I think that the MILAAP was a successful event. And,everyone praised for that.
But,It is also true that two of our representatives resigned.I have my personal view that if they would have called a GBM before the resignation,it would have been better to understand the problems faced by them for collective action.
There is always a possibility that some people will not turn for collective action. Also,in these events, some works needs expertise. For example,I was not expert in dancing, painting or playing with guitar, then how can I learn those things in 3-4 days. So,I contributed in other things.
I am telling you a story about Amitabh Bachchan. When he came back from Calcuuta after fired from the job of an accountant, his father a great poet and philosopher Haribanshrai Bachchan told him-"Beta,jo ho so achha,jo na ho woh aur bhi achha".
So,please left all these things on time. Those who will work get benefitted more than those donot work."Credit-taking" or "Snobshow" donot last for long.
We will celebrtae JAATRA with the same zeal and enthusiasm. No matter who comes or donot come.....

well friends,, I too have had similar concerns,,
@ Nivedita-- for some of the collective actions as is Jaatra, numerical strength is required which in this case would be full participation.

Also here comes the issue of one's priorities and the level to which one relates to the spirit of IRMA. One statement by Prof. Raju resonates in my mind every now and then that many amongst us have a complex of not having made to an IIM and other b-schools and that’s where we are not able to do justice to what we are currently doing. So people be proud, be passionate and respect the culture of IRMA.

Well.. I believe that,
Jaatra will continue to happen despite contribution from all the people(which cannot be achieved). Finally, there will be some of our friends who would be bearing the costs and many free riders who would be enjoying the benefits.
