Wikipedia as collective action!!!!!

Wikipedia as we all know a free encyclopedia of information. Wikipedia is a nonprofit organization (NPO) and has only 35 employees. Can u believe it!!! Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia created by volunteers, and is an example of how developments in software platforms and the low cost of sharing and coordinating on the Internet are leading to a new paradigm of creative collaboration on a massive scale.

Wikipedia today boasts over 7 million articles in 253 languages with over 1,864,000 articles. Wikipedia.org is currently the ninth most popular site on the web. The creation of Wikipedia is an instance of collective action, which is the provision of a public good.

yes, its a perfect example of collective action where "selfless utilitarians" come into action for the greater good of free and easy access of knowledge to all. But still we need many more cooperators, who can either be triggered by the observations of others to keep this project running....
this project will keep running only when the 'full utilitarians" join in...lets see when the graph reaches OB.

I must confess that writing about Wikipedia as an exhibition of collective action and cooperation was truly a masterstroke, speaking volumes about how sometimes we gleefully ignore supremely successful examples of collective action. Founded as an NGO, wiki is a foothold of what community participation can create and the reach it can have to the masses.
