Chhath Pooja – An example of Collective Action and Co-operation

We all know that collective action can be used to fight against injustice or bring about any change in the society. However, the essence of collective action can also be seen in the most important festival of Bihar i.e. Chath Pooja. The soops made by scheduled caste people are used by all others in offering pooja to the Sun God. Not only that, the entire community takes part in cleaning the banks of rivers or other water bodies. An excellent example of collective action in community!!!

One feels so happy by seeing clean roads and ghats of Patna during chatth festival. But what happens on other days of the year when we see those people only dirtying the ghats and streets? We see unity across the castes during this festival. Have we ever thought where this unity disappears once the festival ends? Had this unity and cleanliness continued forever the Sun God would have been more happier........
