The title of this topic has been taken from the "speeches and writings of Mahatma Gandhi,(4th edition),p-356".
In "Harijan",on 31st March 1946 he wrote-"Individual liberty,self-discipline,individual character and honest inter-dependence are essential for life in society.Only a Robinson Crouse can afford to be self-sufficient.When a man has done all he can for the satisfaction of his essential requirements he will seek the coopeartion of his neighbours for the rest. That will be true cooperation."
It includes integrity and honesty with the maximum possible efficiency.
In the last session of MAC,Prof. Arvind Gupta wrote one word-"Character",on the blackboard and said-"If you have all the merits to become a successful person, but, not have character;all the goodness will be nullified."

Can't agree more Keshav bhai.. But I think it's got more to do with misplaced priorities viz. succeeding in life and "making it happen in shortest possible time,no matter the cost " syndrome that is to be blamed.Character at many times take a back seat when faced with cut throat competition u have to secure ur bread..Not to say that i agree with it but this is one of the many 'escapist' arguments i've heard when discussing character with people..
