How many of us actively participate in the class discussion? And how many of us are "zombis"? Majority of us remain passive in the class where there is a collective waste because of our non-participation while our duty is to actively participate and make professors life miserable. And it so happens that professors start questioning the credibility of few people who ask questions. And the silence on the part of majority of the class is taken as basis to drive home some points. By being indifferent to the happenings in the class, we are collectively letting the learning to go waste.

I believe for the success of any collective action, continuous motivation (or any kind of encouragement) is a necessity. Initially people might be interested in something as they have been encouraged, but over time may lose interest or feel that nothing coming out of it and hence avoid putting in effort. And that is exactly what has happened to all of us.
There are many factors apart from motivation or lack of it because of which people participate or do not in class discussions like getting no benefit for participating in form of marks, or lack of interest or really having no point to make or coming from an education system where questioning is not found appropriate.Tackling these reasons would be a better idea to encourage participation.
Indifference is the key point here besides also the immeasurability of the intangible benefits that may accrue. I think if any one has a good point to make which will increase the benefit to other then it should become his responsibility to do so as not doing that would only let mediocrity creep in bringing down the overall benefit of the class.
When there is silence when people lack motivation to speak, it is Indifference. When people lack the motivation to speak when someone from among them who speaks is being criticised for speaking, it is 'Death'.
The classroom becomes a Graveyard and the people become Zombies.
