To walk...or not..

The eight rule of ethics says that the morality of means depend upon the timing of it. In cricket a big issue is made of batsmen who walk voluntarily. However what needs to be looked at, is the balance of the game. If someone walks when the match is already in his team’s pocket it may not mean much .What is important is whether he walks when his dismissal may influence the result decisively.

not only the balance of the game but also the score of the batsman becomes relevant in this situation.the batsman may be approaching a fifty or hundred or with an addition of a few runs he could have achieved some record.in that case walking means too much.

somehow the rule baffles me for it questions the very meaning of ethics because each individual will decide his course of action differently at different times to suit his interest. I would rather look to define "consistency" here.i,e if batsman walks all the time irrespective of his score or balance of his match.
