We are all aware of the collective action and co-operation during the recent floods in Bihar. Why do we wait till the water starts flowing above our head before taking collective action against it? In Bihar’s case, it was known that the embankment was deteriorating. Still the Indian Government didn’t ask the Nepalese Government to let it repair the embankment. The same can be said about the climate change phenomenon occurring across the globe. We are not serious now because we feel that it is not that serious issue. Will it be like Bihar again? Disastrous??

We can’t say that people are not serious about these issues. Almost everybody is aware of the facts but being aware is not always enough for being together and cooperate with each other against it. Collective action requires proper motivation and an effective leadership. We can see it from time immemorial that when it comes to life people have no option to cooperate but even in case of these situations like flood people fight for limited resources. Here again is the case of own survival.
Collective action requires motivation of all the members. The point to note here is that this motivation should come at the right time, preferably before something undesirable has happened or is on the verge of happening. Many cases in our country witness exemplary collective action post a disaster, but, unfortunately, hardly any cases of such action at precautionary level are observed.
