Organisations formed through collective action

Member based people's organisations are organisations of poor people which seek to improve their lot by collective action. It is so as collective action assures them the minimum right to subsistence by an increase in their bargaining power. Also these organisations have a few non poor members. They are important in the sense that they play the role of utilitarian in a collective action initiating the very process. Also every attempt is made to include large and large numbers of poor members into the governance structure so that the interest of the collective is served without subversion by anyone.

One of the important characteristics of these organisations is that these organisations are OF the poor and not FOR the poor. That is why the needs of the poor can be addressed in an effective manner because only the people who are suffering can tell what they want in order to reduce their suffering rather than the people who are looking at the situation from an outside view.

Membership based organization for poor(MBOP)is essential for equitable growth and poverty reduction because they cater the need and aspiration of the poor through collective action and due to its democratic governance structure.
e.g SEWA(Self Employed Women's Association)

Membership Based Organisation of the poor(MBOPs),can give poor people the leverage to fight for the thier right. For example SEWA(Self Employed Women's Association),acted as a chanel for carrying the voice of its members to policy makers and, in turn helped transmit the benefits of poverty focussed government programmes. The objectives of MBOPs can only be fulfilled by strongness of its democratic structures and collectve efforts for which enabling political, legal and policy envirement play an important role.
