In my village one of the works done under NREGA is the deepening of private ponds. The owner have to pledge the extra water to be stored, to the village. Thus this pledged water becomes common property. The workers receive their monetary compensation while the owner’s benefit is the maintenance and longevity of the pond .The village as a whole has paid to get the pond deepened and get water equal to the increased water holding capacity of the pond.
