Reservations!!!!

Most people who hold an anti-reservation viewpoint claim that caste-based reservations are inherently opposed to merit. Slogans like “murder of merit” are common in the anti-reservation movement. I disagree with this point of view. After all, what is the definition of “merit” ? In India admission to educational institutions is primarily based on obtaining high scores in designated examinations. Can we seriously claim that these exams are truly accurate mechanisms for measuring merit ? To a certain extent, examinations in India do measure a candidate’s level of education, but to an even larger extent doing well in these exams depends on joining the right coaching classes and learning the appropriate exam-writing techniques. If, by “merit” we mean innate talent or ability, then our exam system fails miserably to measure it accurately.

Just to add to your point, I feel there has been a historical discrimination against lower castes,sc/sts by the forward castes,upper castes as well as the state. And economically poor in the villages have been deprived of level playing field. Reservation is one way of ensuring that the future generations of these deprived sections of people will not be in the same condition as that of their predecessors.

Anti-reservation viewpoint and caste-based reservations might not be in sync with each other. Reservation is a way of promoting the oppressed and giving them equal opportunity with other more fortunate individuals. And indeed the education system in India emphasizes on marks and grades rather than innovation and learning.

why are we required to give them these reservations and why is the need still there? I think if that question is answered , will settle many issues..

The answer to that can create some unease for the establishment . So thats why it has not been answered till date..

Ya i agree they (oppressed class) need reservation. But the question is how to locate these oppressed class? I feel after 60 yrs of independence we have not figured that out.Another question is that for how long the reservation will continue? There is limit to everything , you cant just keep stretching a rubber because after a certain limit of its elasticity it also breaks. So we have to be clear and decide what is we want from these reservation social upliftment of oppressed class or after some time we ourself have to become oppressed.Equality is the solution but these reservations are not providing it. Its just making the system more imbalanced as u can see in Tamil Nadu 70 % of seats are belong to the reserve classes.

Can you justify this?? In the mdical entrance CET after 12th, I scored some 165 out off 200 and I did not manage to find a single seat anywhere in Maharashtra (state rank was in 4000s). In the best school of Mumbai, there were students who got admission at meagre score of 106-105(state ranks beyond 40000!). Do they really have knowledge to do MBBS?Most of them leave studies after 1st year adding to goverment loses(as they are govt. funded).

I have seen many resereved category students coming to college in cars, everyday! Parents of many earn huge amounts every year. Do they need reservation?

When Dr. Ambedkar proposed reservation, it was only for 2 generations after Independence, and had to be scrapped than. It has been 63 years of Independence, and reservation instead of declining is increasing. Reservation, I feel has become a major agenda that makes or breaks a political party in center. Anybody opposing it will be thrown out, and that is the reason I fel that such stringent reservation policies are instituted!

I don't think many people will have a problem if reservation is given to the the truly deserving candidates. As Arpit pointed out, many people availing reservation benefits these days are sons or daughters of people who have benefited from reservation when they were students. And these people are not at all poor and can very well afford the fees in the same college or in big private colleges.

Is there a mechanism to check that the right candidate gets the benefit ?

Th so called forwards never of our great nation never Registered a copyright on merit. We cant talk of reservation as if it necessarily compromises merit.
@Arpit
You didnt get a seat at 4000 is not reservation's mistake, it is the state's mistake. Rather than blaming the state which has below par infrastructure for the intermediates who want to pursue studies in medicine, you choose to blame a person who got a seat you were never promised. You must have filled up the form knowing full well the reservations applicable. Also knowing how many seats you are elligible for. Why blame the poor chap who got the seat. Who knows he wasnt a first generation reservation benefitter.(if that concept deserves a name even).
@Abhijeet:What do you mean by deserving candidates?
How many Brahmins deserved to be scavengers in the 16th century? You surely do not have an account. Who kept the account then? The so called forward caste. Now, you come weilding with your pen advocating false 'meritocracy' again. it must be clear to you, it wont work this time.
@all my meritorious friends
Pick up the result sheets of Rajasthan state public service commission for the years between 1975 and 1999-2000. Look at the number of people belonging to the SC/ST/OBC getting thru the written tests. also see if they qualified interviews. Most of them did not. See the caste composition of the interview board. It is so grossly unfair and unjust.
Kindly be more sensitive in your attitude when you talk of merit. As it is, I dont see much of Einsteins and Newtons walking among my batchmates.
Merit? humbug...
