compulsory voting on gujarat!! too early or too late!!

The recent decision of the gujarat govt. to make voting compulsory in the municipal elections is a welcome step, as the whole purpose of electing a representative is becoming a joke on account of low voter turn out. It may be argued that it is the political system of the country especially its leaders and their policies which is keeping general public away from voting, but that does not justify it. The proposed amendment has also give an option of not choosing any candidate. It's high time this rule is made mandatory for all elections taking place anywhere in India to make good governance a reality.

Though voting is considered to be a duty, almost everywhere, majority of voters do not turn up. There are different reasons, but I percieve that the biggest reason is the lack of faith in system. People feel that their single vote cannot make the difference. This compulsory voting (along with negative voting) will send a strong message among political party to perform or perish. But again, eagerness of voting should come from within and should not be forced or imposed. The clauses attached with defaulters will affect only certain segment of society. Some better foolproof way should be found out.

Till the citizens won't take there rights from within..these bills won't make such a difference to the system..Instead of blaming the political system,we should look on our account that how much are we responsible for current scenario..The reluctancy we show has hindered a good governance system which we all aim for....
