Global warming is a much debated topic today to the extent that a few even don’t accept it is a cause of concern and others would lay their lives to prove that the melting polar ice is the first step towards doomsday.
Speaking in the same vein, Kyoto Protocol came into being as a way to address the concern where developed countries were given time bound greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. So, this had been a great effort towards collective action on the part of the international community even though USA wasn’t a part of the plan. Developing countries were also given some guidelines but those were not binding.
The recent development at this front is a bit disappointment where European Union, the last flag bearers are also planning to back off from the commitment (according to an article in EPW).
Now all concerns aside, if we try to analyze the whole process where a group of highly informed and intelligent people take a rational decision to save their race from disaster and the same community later pushes rational arguments to back track from the commitment, ceteris paribus.
And as Calculative Rationality says that rationality is an act to collect, asses and interpret information, and draw proper conclusions from it. So, what should we call this climb-down : an act of rationality or irrationality?
