Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a shield used by companies operating in a country which ranks low on the Human Development Index(HDI). We need to understand that the minute we give "responsibility" to these companies the concomitant authority also flows to these companies.
The primary responsibility of companies according to Western Management thinkers is primarily producing goods and services efficiently. Its debatable that such an approach will work in India which lacks a social security scheme prevalent in most other countries.
At the end of the day, companies are judged by their bottom line.Hence one has to be wary of such CSR activities and reconcile ourselves that industry should not supplant the government which is answerable to the public at large.
