Women and collective action ???

During the field work, I observed that NGO’s (SBMA) played a role in motivating the women to come forward and initiate the collective action. These women took the initiative to clean the internal path of the village. These paths were deposited by filth which caused inconvenience for both the human population and the livestock. There were thorny bushes on both the sides of the path and they act as shelters for insects. The head of Mahila Mangal Dal (Women Organization) not only participated but also encouraged the others to join in the action. The fruits of effort of the women there are enjoyed by all including men and the youth.

Then why is it that the youth and men do not participate in such an action. We cannot attribute time as the reason for not participating as the majority of the men do not go outside to work or help in agricultural field.

How can a collective action such as cleanliness be successful unless all the villagers participate in it?

we cannot say that only men or women participate in the cleanliness drive without the active participation of either. there may be few instances where they may have acted separately but there are numerous instances where both have contributed jointly. for instance during chatth puja in bihar, i saw men and women both actively participating in cleaning the path for the devotees.

I do not deny the fact that has been activities were men and women together contributed for collective action.
I was just trying to bring in light some of the villages where the responsibilities lie mainly on the shoulders of women and not shared by others. I also wanted to highlight that youth, which educated or in school did not appreciate or participate in the effort.
