Rationality is not rare ; only that it is costly

BRLPS ( Bihar Rural Livelihood Promotion Society ) and PRADAN go to the farmers and say that we have come up with a new method of rice cultivation named SRI Vidhi which will increase the production at least threefolds. The input cost was not going to increase but still they could not find many takers initially. We might think that it was stupidity on the part of farmers not to adopt such an apparently beneficial method. But now I realize that it was actually on expected lines .We know that to expect people to behave in a way what we think is natural is actual stupidity. Then BRLPS provided the incentive in terms of free seeds, fertilizers and technical inputs and people lapped up SRI method. In my village now 90 farmers are using the method now. BRLPS is gradually withdrawing from providing the incentives....RATIONALITY COMES WITH A PRICE & EFFORT...I think all of us must have come across such examples.

Rationallity would be a decision taken keeping in mind the costs incurred and the benefits derived from an action. Getting a complete idea of Costs incurrred and benefits derived from an action is extremely improbable. People take decisions only keeping in mind the information at their disposal. That I guess would explain the farmer's reluctance to take to SRI at first go.
It would be intersting to see what they do when BRLPS withdraws finally. Keep a track, we will discuss it.

navneet i will like to ask you a question...
why is it so that we search for rationality???
when in rashmirathi krishna says
"Yeh dekh gagan mujh main lay hai yeh dekh pawan mujh main lay hai..."
do you think he is ratinal??
and what about the mass who follows it???
are they irrational???
i am pondering...
Ayand rand has the answer but agin the indian philosophy strikes her off...
what to do???

Not adopting that method in the initial place could have been driven by initial skepticism on the part of farmers to adopt new method..as the most of farmers whom BRLPS targeted were Marginal , they could have been apprehensive about putting their efforts on something new letting go of their usual income sources...that was rational on their part considering the situation.. as BRLPS provided further incentives , they probably would have felt nothing to lose and hence adopted it enmasse....again perfectly rational from their point of view.....
