City of ___ . The "Joy" is no more.
Calcutta has remained a hub of collective action for long. But most of that seems to be subverted towards ends that only help some. Calcutta is infamous for its bandhs, hartals, lockouts etc. There are frequent bandhs to raise an issue which could be about anything. Esplanade in Calcutta is a favorite spot for these people as it is the city center with all the major institutions and facilities nearby. It is the heart of the transport system. But whenever people want to protest they just block this place and with it a major portion of the city.

I totally disagree to you. Talk about the recent example of Nandigram where due to collective action, it forced TATA to exit West Bengal from NANO project.
Also you have talked about bandhs, hartals ,lockouts etc. If these are decreasing, do not it signify that the city in on the verge of progress and the satisfaction of people are also increasing.
Finaly the progress for any city means that the people living there are happily living by enjoying better facilities.
Think you read me wrong.
What I had in the mind was that these bandhs are so frequent that it disturbs the entire civic life. Calcutta is famous for it collectivities but the problem now is that it has really taken an ugly turn.
To put this in perspective, I myself have been a part of student rallies organised by the Student Union of my college (I was forced into it, though). I saw buses and trucks coming with people from the suburban areas loaded into them for Rs. 50 and a packet of Biryani. And this is not an exception rather is a common occurrence.
