How V. Kurien sir attain power in co-operative movement

During our inductionweek, we 've watched the movie screened on Kurien Sir. Relating it to our CAC class, can we try to analyse the evolving leadership in the form of Kurien sir during the kaira co-operative movement . I think in those days, the preservation of milk was the severe problem. The machinary which the co-operative had was very old and used to breakdown often.Kurien sir who had the technical skills used to rectify the problems. I think it was this technical knowledge that gave sir POWER in the whole process of co-operative movement.

His ability to engage a critical mass of the community was another reason for his success. Thus co-operatives were set up only in places were a certain minimum amount of milk was collected. His model depended on a readily available resource - cattle .Also he was able to communicate to the participants about the prospective rewards and the rewards generated matched his promise. Further his tree tier model design was perfect for the co-operative he envisioned. Lastly he was able to win the trust of the co-operative members by keeping the interest of the co-operative members paramount.

It is interesting to see how Kurien emerged as a leader of a movement(and later the organization which resulted) even though he initially wasn’t a part of the co-operative’s beneficiaries.I have tried to fit him atleast partially into one of the nine types of leaders we discussed in the class and managed to place him under the “Do gooders” head.Another point worth analyzing would be that he was NOT so much known to be a democratic leader and yet found favour with the stakeholders based on both knowledge and competence.

He is not only the technically expert, but the biggest asset that he created is the SOCIAL CAPITAL.Today sony sir explained this in the class also.He created this asset over the long period of more than 40 years from the village level to the govt. of India. He has good repute among common villagers to the head of the state. He didnot created it overnight. As we know there is no short-cut to success.Achievements are made only by hard works over a long span of time.
One more interesting thing is that he never learnt Gujarati but communicate with the farmers through his works.
