Mob and our Theories

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXK7ZkcRpH4

This 4 minutes video is to understand the various theories w.r.t mob.

Contagion theory: In this video there are so many villagers standing in the crowd. Do you think everyone will be rational? In the initial stages some people raise their opinion and then the next second every villager shouts on the same lines. Don’t you think most of the villagers might be just following these initial shouters?

Convergent: In the same video one can observe people giving their supportive hands to “Gangajal” i.e acid, that means these people are on same thinking lines which has come out in crowd.

In this we can even try to understand, how a leader is trying to persuade the mob. But he fails to change the crowds inclination towards his line of thought. What was the reason behind this leaders failure?

i would like to give an example for the above mentioned contagion theory. in the village where i went for Feild Work, Bhadreswar, there was a non violent agitation going on against the proposed OPG power Plant. But meanwhile what happened was that there was a hot exchange between the security guard of the company and the few people from the crowd.
Then as soon as a security guard attempted to attack that person the person lost his temper and started beating the security person. soon after seeing this incidence whole crowd lost its control and started beating the security persons and did sabotage.
Point here is that although it was decided to have a non violent protest, the crowd lost its motto as soon as few people from the crowd lost their temper. So it is quite clear that even if the individuals are rational but when they are in crowd they become the part of crowd mentality and lose their individual rationale.
