Social work’s collective action dilemma

Often people join social service initiatives with the intention of doing well. However of these only a small section takes them seriously and does the bulk of work while others just remain as dormant participant .Thus even though the initiative is a collective one yet only a handful works. It is not as if the ones who free ride appropriates the gains out of it, for there are no material gains but just the satisfaction of a job well done. Also since membership is often open, people seeking entry cannot be barred even though they might not be required.

I feel that you are referring to the ektanagar initiative while writing this blog. Don't know if I am correct, but this is exactly the problem we are facing. How do we say No to people who wish to join the initiative and yet, we know, will cease to contribute after a few days?
(reference to any individual is unintentional! :))

It may be because of the peer pressure...when others around are working for the common good....people tend to work for the social cause...that brings one in good book of others...but after a while this enthusiasm comes down and only a handful few those who are actually interested in social work are left for doing the work..
