Failure of a collective action
Attappady is a dry block in Kerala but liquor brewing is one of the main occupations of the tribals there. Thaikulasanghams are groups formed by adivasi women in many hamlets to fight against liquor. they conducted raids and destroyed liquor in many places. The thaikulasanghams are a failure now, not only because of the apathy from the police and excise and stiff opposition from liquor mafia, but also due to the isolation of the members by other adivasis. Why was the collective action to fight against such a social evil, that caused the death of many, a failure here?

I see it as an example of collective waste.
What I believe is that the real problem in this case is not with the breweries or the liquor mafia or even the police. because they are only the medium, while real problem lies with the consumers. And for the success of collective action it should have be targeted at root of the problem and not at the medium.
Evils that seem inevitable are patiently endured. They are endured in the extreme case because the physical and mental energies of people are totally employed in the process of merely staying alive(De Tocqueville).
