What does not make a leader

Today we had a very interesting session on what type of leaders should be avoided , rather than what type should be chosen . when in a normal scenario we look at what makes a leader and what are the traits which disinguish them from others , "what does not make a leader" is something which got me thinking. in todays world as we look around there are more people who have the qualities which make them more unfit , than fit for leadership . the concepts discussed such as nest featherers, recognition seekers etc are all characteristics of most of the common leaders as we see them today. In todays world, there a very few people who genuinely take up selfless leadership .As seen through the numerous examples discussed in class, most leaders today put themselves ahead of their group than vice versa.

Interests of the leader instead of the group is a peculiar problem faced by many groups. What is important is to recognize such leaders and avoid them. The main problem that I feel here is that the group does not realize that the leader is detrimental to health of the group. And most of the times, it becomes too late before everybody realizes it. So, I think a mechnism should be installed in all co-operation basd groups which checks these misdeeds.

The problem is recognizable and can be fixed sooner or later when the leader is deceiving his/her flock for personal benefit and interests. But this problem takes a sinister form when a misguided leader himself genuinely believes that his actions are in the best interests of his flock. This is especially true in the case of 'Dogma Pedlars' who may try to 'convert'people from one political ideology or religion to another.
The leader, in this case would sincerely believe he is actually saving those people. Here it is not the people who are deceived, but it is the leader who has deceived himself. Self deception can be more dangerous than deceiving others.
